Have you ever considered mindful ear training before?

Well, if you have. Well, good for you.

And if you haven't, there's

something deeply special in it for you.

These exercises should help you turn to pass to the next level of mindful sonic awareness.

Number one mindful ear practice is: frequency ranges.

This grows the ability to correctly estimate a range of frequency closed eyed. But first before you can hear the half octave, one third an octave or perfect pitches, you will have to use either a numerical frequency reader, a frequency sheet, or a graphic EQ as a reference to guide you on the right footing – you will

start to internalize and audate what you are hearing and seeing on your reference until eventually you are there.

Number two Mindful ear training practice is: Dynamics.

Brining mindful attention to hear out sound peaks and decay in your immediate surrounding will develop this muscle to appreciate the infinite shape qualities of sound that is very interpretational to processes and properties. You can make up your own keywords to make sense of it but also you can use an ancient guide like the Italian terminology for a fun starting point. Dynamics in sound affect dynamics in life. Bring close attention to that.

Number Three mindful Ear practice is: Reverb Chambers.

This one is perhaps the most volatile and tricky. As sound ever find itself in reflective mode unless in a treated room or deserted land, the game will be to bring attention to the bounce of waves from one room to another. Creating these comparisons will make you a sharper ear on the long run and your ability to spot on the slightest of reflective fluctuation will increase by time.

Number Four mindful ear training practice is: Sound proximity.

Imagine your life depends on echolocation or you in the wild trying to approximate your next meal or predator. This is a life-or-death skill than can save your life or your besties. Hearing what is at a distance, what is not in range of sight. This one is so much fun especially if you are in an urban environment as-long-as there are no overloads.

The next two are more for the producer / engineer.

Number Five mindful ear practice is: Comb Filtering.

This is essential as a producer or engineer as the sanity of the recording depends on it. When a delay occurs between two signals of the same source, comb filtering can occur from micing or from reflections in the immediate environment resulting in constructive interference of waves that degrades the over all signal. Your ability to detect this will come with experience ands working with different situations in different scenarios. Good luck.

Number Six mindful ear practice is: hearing overloads.

Overloads are essentially clipping, resonant square raves that pass the recommended dose of decibels. In most cases these will be bad but, in some cases, if the distortion amount is not exceeding by far in decibels and the harmonics sound pleasant enough due to the properties of the tube or transistor you are working with, that is a characteristic okay. Funny enough, nature doesn’t produce overloads except in cases of natural out surges like volcanoes, tornadoes, or crazy winds.
